I was pleased to hear about plans to get consultants to work at weekends.

Statistics show that you are more likely to die if you are admitted to hospital on a Saturday or Sunday than during the week.

This is because there are less senior consultants on duty.

If you have ever been in hospital for a long time you will know that everything winds down at weekends. It is really quiet and you hardly ever see a doctor, let alone a consultant.

But it’s not just a question of increasing the number of consultants.

We need to invest in all the support facilities.

Consultants need to have 24/7 access for diagnostic services, x-rays, blood tests and so on.

I have nothing but praise for all the care I have received in hospital.

I think the staff do an absolutely fantastic job and are run off their feet.

We need to recruit more doctors, nurses and consultants instead of wasting so much money on bank staff.

We need to spend more money to make sure our NHS continues to offer the best healthcare in the world.
