I HAVE literally been surprised by the commissioner elections. Until a few weeks ago when I was asked by the council if I would be available to assist in the count I was completely unaware of the election. The only information I have received is my voting papers.

At 56 I have voted in every election which has taken place in my lifetime and consider the vote to be very important. On one occasion I drove a round trip of 300 miles to exercise my vote as I was working away from home. For the first time in my life I will not be voting as I have no idea what I am voting for.

Also whatever the issues I cannot imagine they should be determined by party political issues and as far as I am aware party members are the only ones standing.

Why are we wasting time and money on this when it is a time of austerity?
