WIDNES Vikings’ new recruit Lloyd White would love to emulate his uncle - Phil Ford - by scoring a try against Australia.
The newly-crowned Wales player of the year is expected to keep the number seven jersey to face the Kangaroos at Wrexham on Sunday after returning from hamstring trouble to figure in the 36-0 loss to New Zealand at Wembley at the weekend.
Selection will give him another opportunity to gain valuable experience ahead of his first of three seasons with Vikings in Super League as well as matching the feat of his uncle Phil, who was a try scorer against Australia 23 years ago.
“I’d be silly to say that I wouldn’t want to achieve that,” said the Cardiff-born 22-year-old, who joins the Vikings stronghold from Crusaders.
“Let’s just see how it goes.”
Ford, former Warrington, Wigan, Bradford, Leeds, Salford, Wales and Great Britain winger or full back, touched down in both the second and third Tests of 1988.
But before White can think of adding to his two tries in eight Wales appearances, he and the Dragons are focusing on cutting out the errors that cost them some scoring opportunities against the Kiwis in their second defeat of the Gillette Four Nations series.
“We need to cut out errors. We can’t play if we don’t have the ball and we’ve been giving the ball away too cheaply,” he said after Wales were nilled for the first time in their history.
“The defeat at Wembley was tough to take but we showed in the second half (after trailing 26-0 at half time) that we’ve got more to give.”
White loved playing at Wembley and did get close to the try line in the first half after a weaving run.
“It was outstanding playing there, a great experience,” he said.
“It would definitely be nice to go back there with Widnes one day. Dreams and hopes, we’ll see how it goes.”
White went into the Wembley game on the back of being revealed as Wales’ international player of the year at the Rugby League International Federation awards dinner at the Tower of London last Wednesday.
