FOLLOWING their 46-30 victory over Halifax at the weekend, Widnes Vikings Reserves team have now completed the 18 weekly rounds of the U23s Championship and finished in pole position on the table.
This means they will enter the top six play-offs as League leaders and benefit from a ‘home’ advantage in the knock-out stage of the competition.
Coached by Mark Moran and Mike Wainwright, the Reserves have won 15, drawn two and lost on just one occasion in 2011, much to the delight of the coaching duo in their debut season at the helm.
Moran said: “Mike and myself joined midway through pre-season and we’re extremely pleased with the progress the players have made in the relatively short amount of time that we’ve spent together.
“They’re a hard working bunch who are eager to learn and prepared to work hard at improving their game.
“The team spirit has been superb throughout and this togetherness has certainly helped them pull-through several close games this season.”
Moran is also keen to stress the point that despite their impressive season thus far, nothing will be taken for granted with the end of season spin-off competition looming large and it’s important the team don’t take their eye off the ball; “To have come this far with a constantly changing squad of players is testament to the boys themselves.
We haven’t had anywhere near the same 17 players each week and have continually rotated our resources, but fortunately we haven’t lost any consistency or quality as a result.
“Everybody within our group is well aware that the hard work starts now and collectively, we’ll be giving it our best shot in our attempt to bring some silverware to the club and we won’t be happy until we deliver our aim.”
