Batley Bulldogs’ stand-in stand-off Tommy Gallagher will be looking to make it third time lucky when he travels to Blackpool for the Northern Rail Cup final against Widnes Vikings on Sunday (July 18).
The former Hull KR player reached the National League One Grand final in 2006 and the Arriva Trains Cup final in 2004 with Rovers but lost on both occasions.
He said: “I have been to a couple of finals before and it’s a great day out and an amazing experience for a player. It’s something you really look forward to because you’ve worked so hard to reach the final.
“I haven’t been on the winning side at a final yet so I am hoping it’s third time lucky this year with Batley.
“I know a few of the Widnes lads from when I had a season at the club, so it would be great to get one over on them at the final.”
Tommy hopes he has secured his place in Batley’s Northern Rail Cup final team after an impressive performance in last weekend’s 34-16 victory against Barrow Raiders when he scored four tries in a man-of-the-match award-winning display.
“It was an unusual position for me at the weekend, I’m not used to half-back but I think I put in a good performance so hopefully I have done enough to be selected,” he said.
“We are a confident team and I think that on the day we can beat anybody. The victory last weekend against Barrow will give us a bit of a boost ahead of the final because Barrow are a good side and they are doing well in the Co-operative Championship.
“The final means a lot to Batley because they haven’t reached one in a long time so I hope we do the town proud.”

Supporters purchasing tickets for the Northern Rail 9s, held at Fylde Rugby Club on Saturday July 17, will be given a promotional code to secure a discount for the Northern Rail Cup Final.
