Vikings team up with St Maries
3:25pm Wednesday 31st October 2012 in Vikings news
Widnes Vikings have announced a ground breaking partnership with community club Widnes St. Maries, which will see the local side change its name after 75 years to St Maries Vikings.
This unique affiliation will see the open age team playing all of their home games at the Stobart Stadium and the Maries’ traditional club colours will also change to black and white throughout the entire club to mirror those of the Vikings.
Widnes St. Maries A.R.L.F.C was formed in 1937 when some ex-pupils of St. Maries R.C. School in Widnes got together with the headmaster Mr Joseph Ludden, and decided to continue to play in the local leagues as a junior team. Little did they know that seventy five years later, the team would still be going strong.
During this time, St. Maries have produced many players that have gone on to make the grade in the professional game, and have always took great pride in their abilities to nurture talent at a young age and provide the first step along this pathway.
Aside of its open age team, St. Maries Vikings are currently running both an Under 11s and Under 14s team. The club is also pleased to announce the launch of the ‘Mini Vikings.’ The Mini Vikings will focus on 5-7 year olds and will function as skill building preparation for children to play the game at under 7’s level. It is anticipated that an Under 7’s team will be established by early 2013.
The first ‘Mini Vikings’ session will take place at 5.00pm on Friday 16th November on the i-pitch at the Stobart Stadium. Admission is free for the launch night and will cost just £2 per child, per session thereafter.
