WIDNES Vikings boss Denis Betts expressed his surprise that last weekend's abandoned game at Wakefield Trinity even started.

Snow before the game meant the action that did take place did so on a white blanket with the lines difficult to make out and handling conditions treacherous.

Eventually the referee called a halt to proceedings on 27 minutes, meaning the game will now have to be re-played.

Vikings boss Denis Betts expressed his surprise that the game had gone ahead, given the forecast.

He said: “Airports were closing, amber warnings were in place saying do not travel and yet we were told to make the best attempt to get over the Pennines.

“Although it was ok when we arrived, it was always scheduled to come down when it did.

“I was surprised that the match commissioner even allowed it to start.

We could not see the game and the referee made the right call - if anything - he could have done it sooner.

“It was no good for the people stood there watching as you could not see the game.”

For the record, a Liam Finn penalty on eight minutes gave Wakefield the lead in what was, as long as it lasted, an evenly fought contest.

The game will now have to be fitted into a busy schedule.

Vikings entertain Salford on Thursday,(7:45pm kick-off), with Betts highlighting Rob Lui as the danger man.

Vikings are continuing with Danny Craven in the halves.

“We needed to get Danny’s foot on the ball and he has been waiting to get into the side.

“Defensively he is strong and he is dangerous with the ball in hand.

“It gives us a little bit of rotation ahead of four games in two weeks,” Betts said.

Vikings 19-man squad: Greg Burke, Ed Chamberlain, Ted Chapelhow, Danny Craven, Chris Dean, Rhys Hanbury, Aaron Heremaia, Chris Houston, Ryan Ince, Krisnan Inu, Jordan Johnstone, MacGraff Leuluai, Stefan Marsh, Joe Mellor, Tom Olbison, Charly Runciman, Brad Walker, Matt Whitley, Sam Wilde.
