WIDNES Vikings' Super League fixture at Wigan Warriors has been postponed.

Due to the current state of the DW Stadium pitch, following Storm Doris, Wigan Athletic's Championship clash with Nottingham Forest on Saturday will take priority over Friday's match.

The Latics and Forest are currently battling against relegation.

Vikings CEO James Rule said the club was not consulted ahead of trhe decision.

Tonight they issued a statement: "Widnes Vikings wish to apologise for the confusion surrounding the status of their fixture with Wigan Warriors, scheduled for tomorrow evening."

The game was called off 24 hours ahead of kick off.

Rule said: "At 6.30pm, I received a call from Kris Radlinski who informed me that Wigan Atheltic and Ian Lenagan had agreed to the postponement of our fixture, due to the condition of their pitch and the importance of Wigan Athletic's upcoming fixture.

"As we have not been involved in any consultation prior to this announcement, we are unable to comment further at this stage. We will do so in due course."

The game will not be played later this weekend and will now have to be re-scheduled which will make it two blank weeks in a row off for Vikings so early in the season.

Wigan Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan said: “With the inclement weather over the last day resulting in intermittent standing water on the pitch and the further forecasted bad weather over the next 24 hours, the DW Stadium pitch simply cannot sustain two games this weekend.

“With Wigan Athletic’s season at such a critical stage and after detailed discussions between myself and Wigan Athletic chairman, David Sharpe, it was agreed that they need to play this fixture more than we need to play ours.

“Potential for the game to be moved to Sunday was discussed but this simply isn’t an option with the pitch in its current state, therefore the game will be rescheduled for later this season."

The next outing for Denis Betts' men will be at Catalans Dragons on Saturday, March 4.

"We apologise to our fans for the inconvenience and disappointment this causes," continued Lenagan.

"I too am bitterly disappointed not to be able tomorrow night to welcome our champion team but feel certain that we have made the right decision.”
