VIKINGS winger Corey Thompson has become the latest star to commit his future to the club.

The 26-year-old flyer has penned a one-year extension to his contract, which will keep him at the Select Security Stadium until the end of the 2018 season.

Thompson joined the club from NRL side Canterbury Bulldogs prior to the 2016 season and has quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with in Super League.

He currently has 20 league tries to his name, with Castleford’s Denny Solomona the only man to have outscored him, and says it was an easy decision to stick around.

He also says the team can go places in the future.

“I think Widnes have shown that we can produce something exciting in the years ahead," he said.

“If we stay injury free, we can definitely challenge for the top four. I'm looking forward to contributing to that in the years ahead and continuing to make progress in my own game, as well.

“I'm really pleased to stay and be a part of it. We have a good bunch of lads here and the coaches encourage us to play an exciting style of footie.

“I've had to work hard for some of my tries, but I've also had some 'walk-ins'. I've benefitted from the way we play and I hope that will continue for the next couple of years.”

Vikings head coach Denis Betts also expressed his delight with Thompson’s decision to stay put.

“Corey is a quality player. He offers the unexpected and is improving all the time. He can play wing or fullback and is also a proven goal kicker,” he said.

“Keeping this stability and security in the squad will help us to continue our development.”
