WIDNES boss Denis Betts is looking for significant improvement from his players when they take on Huddersfield Giants at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday.

Individual lapses cost the Vikings dear in their 38-16 loss at Hull KR at the weekend and with no room for manoeuvre in terms of team selection, Betts will be basically relying on the same group to turn things around.

Huddersfield’s 30-19 win in a spiteful game against Warrington on Sunday saw them move into the Top 4 of the First Utility Super League table.

Betts knows his side are in for a stiff test against a team led around the field by one of the best half-backs in the game in Danny Brough.

He said “They’re going to be tough. They see themselves as a contending side and have given themselves a great opportunity to make the Top 4 at the end of it all.

“Danny Brough’s always a threat whether he’s kicking the ball out of hand or running the ball.

“There are a couple more in there like Luke Robinson and Joe Wardle who’s playing really well at the moment.

“They’ve also got some young kids who’ve come into their side who are very fast and strong and look like real talents.

“They’ve got pace, toughness and also an understanding of what it takes to be in that top half of the table now and how resilient you have to be.

“They come here as an experienced top-end-of the-table side that know they need to win.

“It’s setting itself up to be a big challenge for us.”

None of the Vikings injured players are in line for a return this week.

Winger Paddy Flynn is getting close but will need time to improve his basic fitness having been unable to run properly due to a hamstring problem.

Betts is hopeful that Flynn, alongside Hep Cahill and Eamon O’Carroll, will come back into the team before the competition splits into the Super 8s.
