WIDNES Vikings coach Denis Betts does not believe the new Marquee Player Allowance is set to have a massive impact on Super League.

Last week the top flight clubs voted 8-4 to allow clubs the ability to identify one key, high cost player in their team and only have £100,000 or £175,000 count on the year’s salary cap with the figure depending on whether they are club trained or brought in from outside.

Certainly, for a club like Widnes, the ability to pay one star name as much as you want is not going to lead them to rush out, chequebook in hand.

Betts will be concentrating on continuing to develop his playing squad in a sustainable manner, not taking a gamble on a big name Australian.

He said: “Nothing’s changed for us.

“We came into this with a plan.

“We know where we sit and what we’ve got to do.

“We’ve got to develop the players we’ve got and find ones that are going to enhance our environment.

“That’s not necessarily all about money.

“It’s about finding the right characters who fit what we want.

“Ultimately, this club spent many years in the wilderness because it felt it should spend money it didn’t have.

“We can’t do that again to this organisation.

“I’ve got to make sure this team functions at its highest level every single week with what we’ve got.

“For me to start making demands about Marquee players now, just because it’s allowed, won’t help the club 10 or 15 years down the line.

“We started with a plan four or five years ago and we don’t want to just blow it all on one year.

“It’s a bit like betting on red or black.

“It might come up red; but there’s a chance it could come up black!

“And you walk out with nothing.”
