STEVE Prescott’s autobiography One in a Million will be on sale before Vikings’ game against Wigan tonight.

It is book which takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of emotions – dealing as it does with the former St Helens and Hull FC full back’s rugby league career and then battle against terminal cancer.

Although plenty has been written about Steve’s courageous battle against pseudomyxoma peritonei – a rare form of abdominal cancer – readers will for the first time be told the whole story.

There are plenty of Widnes connections too – with a picture section featuring seven-year-old Steve approaching Wembley in 1981 bedecked in the black and white of the Chemics.

He was, of course, following his dad Eric’s team, and the early part of the book talks about watching Widnes and Runcorn Highfield.

He was, of course following his dad Eric’s team and the early part of the book talks about watching his dad play for Widnes and Runcorn Highfield.

Steve explains how nerves got too much for his mum in the 1982 cup semi final against Leeds – causing them to miss the famous last gasp Mick Adams up and under try scored by Keiron O'Loughlin which secured the Chemics passage to Wembley.

Although he eventually followed in his father’s footsteps and signed for Saints, in the book Steve explains how a trial at Naughton Park saw him rejected by Widnes with the words “no better than what we have already got in the A team.”

Steve wrote the book with the help of Widnes World’s senior sports writer, Mike Critchley, and the manuscript was completed shortly before his death in November 2013.

Steve’s wife, Linzi, wrote the moving final two chapters of what is widely expected to become one of the biggest-selling rugby league books.

One in a Million is on sale tonight at Vikings superstore Tesco between 6-7pm and can also be ordered online by logging on to spfund.co.uk. priced £17.99.
