WIDNES got back to winning ways in the First Utility Super League with a 42-24 victory at bottom club London Broncos.

The Vikings had only picked up one point in their previous five games but always looked to have the edge against a Broncos team long on enthusiasm but short on quality.

In stand-off Kevin Brown, Widnes had the string-puller in chief and his kicking game was a key difference on a slippery surface.

The home side enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half but consistently failed to find the killer touch.

They opened the scoring with a Josh Drinkwater penalty but the Vikings hit back with a try from virtually their first attack of the game. Left winger Patrick Ah Van latched onto a perfectly judged Brown kick with Danny Tickle converting.

Widnes doubled their points tally on 23 minutes when Jon Clarke's flat pass sent Hep Cahill sailing through to score.

When a short ball from Brown sent Danny Galea under the posts it looked like a cricket score could be in the offing.

However, on the stroke of half-time threequarter Denny Solomona pulled back six points for London after chasing a speculative Scott Moore punt.

It was in the period just after the interval that the Vikings really asserted their superiority as the home side's handling continually let them down in the drizzly conditions.

A searing Dave Allen break was finished off by Rhys Hanbury just three minutes in and that was quickly followed by a powerful Paddy Flynn finish from Joe Mellor's long pass.

When Flynn went in again after a Brown 40/20 had set up the position, the game was effectively won at 36-8.

Credit to the Broncos who refused to give up and hit back with scores from James Greenwood and the impressive Atelea Vea.

By way of a 'don't argue' Widnes responded with Hanbury's second try after Ben Kavanagh had done the spadework.

The Broncos did at least have the consolation of scoring last through second row Matt Cook just before the hooter.

Not a vintage performance by the Vikings, but two handy points secured in their quest for a top eight spot.
