England Under-21 boss Aidy Boothroyd remains confident the Young Lions will avoid a goalkeeping crisis.

Angus Gunn (back) and Freddie Woodman (hip) missed training on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s friendly with Romania.

It has left just Shrewsbury’s Dean Henderson, on loan from Manchester United, fit 48 hours before the game at Molineux.

Norwich goalkeeper Gunn, on loan from Manchester City, has become Boothroyd’s number one since Jordan Pickford moved to the senior set-up following Euro 2017.

Boothroyd said: “We have a back and hip little issue with Angus and Freddie. Because they’re both goalkeepers we’ve taken them out of the firing line, as a precaution. I’m hoping both will be fine.”

Jack Harrison trained separately due to an abdominal strain but the Middlesbrough winger, on loan from Manchester City, is expected to be fit.

England host Romania ahead of their Euro 2019 qualifier against Ukraine in Sheffield on Tuesday. The Young Lions are five points clear at the top of Group Four.

Boothroyd added: “I’ve picked Romania because they’re a lot like Ukraine so we’ve done the training as if we’re preparing for one game.

“They are doing well in their group and are the sort of team, like a Slovakia, who might just sneak in there.”

The friendly at Molineux has been called the Cyrille Regis International in memory of the former West Brom and Wolves striker who died suddenly in January.

Boothroyd hopes the result, and goals, can act as a tribute to the ex-striker.

“I didn’t get to know him until after he finished playing. I always found him to be a charming man, quietly spoken, who will be sorely missed,” he added.

“Hopefully our number nines can score a couple of worldie goals which can pay tribute to him.”
