Wids frustrated by match postponement

First published in Sport

There was disappointment for Widnes RUFC when their North One West league fixture away at Fleetwood was postponed on the morning of the game because of a waterlogged pitch.

It meant that there was no opportunity for Lee McDermott’s side to build on the previous week’s excellent victory over Wirral, which helped to exorcise the memory of two defeats by the men from the Memorial Ground last season.

However, the free week has given the players the opportunity to recover from a few bumps and bruises and recharge their batteries, allowing them to come back refreshed and raring to go. That will be good news for players such as talisman prop forward Paul Borg who has been missing with a knee injury since the first game of the season.

This coming weekend Widnes have an attractive home game to look forward to when they take on high flying Carlisle at Heath Road (kick off 3.00pm) Supporters will remember that the game between these two sides last season was a real cracker. The host side were well ahead at the break, before having to withstand a sensational Carlisle fight back in the second half before finally claiming the spoils 33 – 28. This season, they have started the season well enough but were narrowly beaten 21 – 15 at home to promotion favourites Sale last Saturday. Interestingly enough, teams who have played Sale have then failed to back it up the following weekend suggesting that a Widnes victory should be the order of the day. However, Coaches Lee McDermott and Paul Newall know better than to take anything for granted, and they will be leaving nothing to chance as they look to continue to get their side climbing up the table and remain in touch with the leading group.

In other senior games this coming weekend, the Seconds are on the road again when they travel to face Macclesfield, whilst the Thirds go to West Park looking to kick start their season after a difficult start.
