THE wheels fell off the Widnes bandwagon in spectacular fashion as bottom placed Anselmians finally got their season underway with a tremendous victory to lift them off the bottom of the table.

Their game plan worked a treat, and by the end the visitors were looking thoroughly dispirited.

In the first half, Simon Mason kicked four first half penalties along with a conversion following a Hellier try, whilst Widnes scored two tries from Phil Glover and Chris Schofield and a Kevin Leadbetter penalty to make it 19 – 13 at half time.

In the second half, Anselmians soon added another converted try and a penalty either side of Paul O’Connor, who sliced his way through for a third Widnes try.

On 70 minutes, Andrew O’Neill reached out to score Widnes’ fourth try and Kevin Leadbetter converted to make the score 29 – 25.

But, that was as good as it got for Widnes. Two further Mason penalties and a try from Whorton, along with a final booming touchline conversion wrapped up the points for the home side.
