Widnes Colts hastily arranged a friendly game with their Manchester opponents after Liverpool St Helens were unable to field a side in the opening week of the Raging Bull League.
The two sides were evenly matched in a defensive encounter. Sean McMuldroch, Joe Gallaway, Craig Farmer and Liam Lawton all playing well on their debuts.
McMuldroch had Widnes' best chance in the first half jinking his way on a 35 yard run only to be tackled inches short of the line. Tom Beech kicked a penalty goal for the Wids 10 minutes before the break for the only score of the half.
The second half saw Widnes introduce Josh Kenyon, Olly Glover, Johnny Underwood and Jack Butler all on their debuts, scrum half Ben Mercer was denied a score from a blind side break by excellent Park cover defence. Wing man Luke Nelson then went close, the referee adjuding he was held up over the try line.
Minutes later the big winger went over after neat play from stand off Tom Beech. Park got a well deserved consolation try with the last play of the game. Sean McMuldroch was awarded the Wids Man of the Match. The Colts hopefully will start their League campaign on Sunday against Birkenhead Park at Heath Road.
