Widnes opened their account in North One West, with a tough, hard earned victory at Round Ash Park.
As expected, it was nip and tuck all the way through with Leigh knocking over a couple of first half penalties from Grundy, and Widnes replying with one from Dave Welsh to make it 6 – 3 at half time. A stiff talking to at the break got Widnes moving, and on 45 minutes Paul Borg crossed for a try in the corner with Welsh adding a booming touchline conversion.
A further exchange of penalties made it 13 – 9, before a speculative up and under from George Lang paid dividends as the ball found its way to Dave Welsh who scored in the corner to wrap up the victory.
There was still time for Leigh to get themselves another penalty, which Grundy converted to earn the home side a bonus point.
In the other senior games, both the Second and Third teams lost against Leigh and St Edwards Old Boys respectively.
