WIDNES cyclist Lucy Martin was 48th over the line in the women’s road race that saw Team GB win their first medal of London 2012.

Martin, the youngest and last home of Britain’s racing quartet, fell away from the leading group on her Olympic debut and finished outside the event’s time limit.

But the 22-year-old was racing to order, following a team plan that was in place to help her AA Drink-leontien.nl clubmate Lizzie Armitstead secure a medal.

Armitstead returned to The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace inches behind Dutch winner Marianne Vos at the end of 140.3km of pedalling to claim the silver medal.

Afterwards, Leeds-born Armitstead paid tribute to her teammates, including Martin, saying: “My teammates did exactly what they were asked and I can’t thank them enough.”
