WIDNES pulled off a narrow victory over rivals Leigh to keep up their challenge at the top of North One West.

Defences were on top as expected in this keenly fought affair, but three tries to nil probably suggests that the home team just about deserved it.

Widnes scored an early try through Gareth Riley, converted by Jon Hetherington, before two Wilcox penalties for Leigh left them a point adrift at half time.

Another successful kick gave the visitors the lead before winger Chris Schofield regained the initiative for the home side on the hour mark.

Back came Leigh though, and when Wilcox converted his fourth penalty, it was all square again.

With the draw looking a distinct possibility, the timely introduction of Pieu Liku, saw the wing forward crash over close enough for a try which was converted by man of the match Andrew Riley.

Widnes scored four tries to two with wingman Luke Nelson going over for a hat trick.

Played on a very heavy pitch Park used their heavy forwards to make in roads resulting in them taking an early lead.

Wids hit back with Nelson’s efforts but the game was in the balance with eight minutes when Mike Jones went over in the corner. Luke Nelson was awarded the North West Contracts man of the match.
