Liverpool St Helens 17 Widnes 34.

WIDNES pulled off the result of the season in North One West, with a magnificent performance at Moss Lane.

The visitors never really looked like losing this one after building up a 17-0 lead midway through the first half.

Kevin Leadbetter had opened their account with a penalty before Pieu Liku scored their first try which the winger also converted. When fullback Andrew Riley scored their second, which was also converted, the visitors had the bit between their teeth.

Full back Matty Cunliffe pulled back a penalty for the home side, but it was short lived as prop forward Paul Borg crashed in at the corner to give them a 22-3 half time lead.

In a tit-for-tat start to the opening of second half, LSH were straight back in it as Paul Bamber scored, only for the visitors to reply shortly afterwards as Matty Smith went over.

Back came LSH once again, as John Pope crashed over and Cunliffe converted to reduce the arrears once again.

But Wids were not to be denied, and, after absorbing pressure, they found the resolve with a breakway try from Kevin Leadbetter, which the winger converted to round off a great afternoon.
