Widnes picked up their first victory of the season outscoring their Cheshire opponents three tries to two. Widnes raced into a 14 point lead wingman Josh McGinty squeezing in at the corner from a long Thompson pass, Mike Jones kicked the difficult conversion.
Minutes later Scott Thompson powered over from 20 yards after Widnes had made ground through Matty Thomas, Chris Lock and the hardworking Geoff Cooke, Jones added the extras.
Congleton got back into the game slicing through the Wids defence.
On the stroke of half time the hosts added a penalty goal to leave the Wids 14 -8 up.
The second half saw Widnes dominate for long periods, Jon Preston and Aaron Duggan winning ample line out ball allowing Tom Beech to pin Congleton back into their own 22 with accurate kicking.
Adam Watson extended the Wids lead scoring his first try for the Club after excellent work from Alex Clare and Ben Mercer, Jones added his third conversion.
Congleton then closed the gap scoring a long range try against the run of play.
Substitute Anthony Winterton then went close following an excellent Beech kick.
With 10 minutes remaining Jones calmed with the Wids nerves slotting over a 30 yard penalty goal after a superb Beech break from inside his own half.
Preston was awarded man of the match pushed closely by the strong running Thompson.
The Colts entertain Hawcoat Park at Heath Road on Sunday 2pm kick off.
