WIDNES found the going tough against a more experienced and physical Sefton outfit.
With only a handful of last year's Colts side still eligible to play, the Wids had to rely on a lot of last season's under 16s who were making their debut in Colts rugby and will only get better over the next three years.
Sefton set the tone early on, keeping the ball tight using their massive pack to pin Widnes down in their own 22.
Try saving tackles by Winterton, Preston, Cook and Duggan kept the Widnes line intact, limiting Sefton to a penalty goal after 14 minutes.
The Widnes line was broken 10 minutes later after sustained pressure by the Sefton forwards.
Widnes got on the score sheet courtesy of a Mike Jones penalty after a fine break from Alex Clare.
Widnes started to make inroads into the Sefton half through the strong running Remy Julienne and the hardworking Jonathan Preston.
Any hope Widnes had of getting back into the game was wiped out after conceding two tries either side of half time.
Fifteen minutes into the second half captain Dean Morris barged over from a planned five-yard line-out move, Jones kicking an excellent conversion.
Sefton ran in two late tries to wrap up the game.
Jonathan Preston was awarded the man of the match closely followed by scrum half Tom Beech.
The Wids coaching staff were more than pleased with the effort of this young Colts side and hope for continued improvement as the season progresses.
