Widnes 13 Wigan 3

WIDNES narrowly edged Saturday’s keenly fought derby at Heath Road. The visitors took an early lead in the RFU South Lancashire/ Cheshire One clash with a penalty from Andy Whittle.

But that was the only joy they had against a Widnes defence that was as tight as a drum. Karl Shingler crossed for Widnes after 29 minutes and Jon Hetherington added the conversion. Wigan lost a player to the sin bin just after half time and Hetherington slotted over the resultant penalty. With 12 minutes remaining it was left to Hetherington – the hero of the previous week's last-minute win in the Isle of Man – to convert a difficult long-range penalty and seal the victory.

WIDNES did just enough against a spirited Preston outfit to reach the semi finals of the North West League Cup.

Preston led 17-7 but Widnes started the second half well.

Eventually, Schofield combined with McLindon to touch down with Smith adding the extras, as he did to Hancock’s first-half try.

With seven minutes remaining Lang sliced open the Preston defence from inside his own half, handing on to the supporting McLindon who released Wills to score in the corner to seal the victory.

WIDNES’ loss really tightens things up at the bottom end of Miller Homes Division Two. With two games to come over the Easter period, it is vital that Widnes get something from either or both to avoid a relegation dogfight.

Arnie Haydock and man of the match Antony Leadbetter both crossed for Widnes, while Chris Morgan added a conversion.

WIDNES put in a decent effort against Collegiate who have now secured back-to-back promotions since joining the Miller Homes League.

The visitors, on the other hand, have had to do it tough all season with a raft of injuries, retirements and illness affecting their regular match line-up.

Despite all of that though, they put in a top effort against the champions-elect, with Reynolds and Holland being their stand out players.
