Wids defeat of Anselmians makes it tight at top

WIDNES pulled off a terrific win at third place Anselmians to really tighten things up at the top of rugby union’s South Lancs Cheshire One.

The visitors’ enterprising style saw them leading at the break 17-12 with tries from hooker Ben Glover and Paul Borg, both of which were converted by Kevin Leadbetter who also kicked a penalty.

The home side had to rely on the boot of Simon Mason, who kicked four penalties.

In the second half, Widnes extended their lead with a Leadbetter penalty and then another try from scrum half Michael Lamb.

After Widnes lost a player to the sin-bin which disrupted their rhythm, Anselmians got back into it with a converted try and then two more Mason penalties to leave the visitors hanging on at the end.
