It was job well done for Widnes as they secured two more league points in a frustrating stop-start affair at Birch Lane.

Tries in the first half from Andy Riley, Matty Smith and Antony Leadbetter, along with three conversions from Kevin Leadbetter sent them into the break leading by 21- 5.

In the second period, Leadbetter added a penalty, whilst there were further tries from Jon Hetherington and Matty Smith who crossed for his second try of the game.

Widnes put on a much better show than they have done in recent weeks, but it was not quite enough to see off second place Stockport at Heath Road.

The visitors arrived with a big pack and made it count in the first half leading 15-0 scoring three tries.

There was a much better effort in the second half from the home side led by man of the match Tom Griffiths closely followed by Mark Whitfield.

Josh Paton and Matty Buckle scored tries for Widnes and Chris Morgan added a conversion.
