Blackbrook u16 0 Halton Farnworth Hornets u16 38

National Cup first round: THE HFH under 16s last involvement in the National Cup two years ago saw the Hornets lift the trophy.

This year they faced Blackbrook Royals in the first round.

The Hornets scored on their first set of six tackles when Mark Percival went over wide out.

Andrew Sheridan landed a magnificent touchline conversion and the Hornets had the perfect start.

Hornets forced a knock-on, leaving the home side only 20 yards from their line.

The ball went right where Jon Rigby grounded the ball in the corner.

Three minutes later, Lewis Hulme split the home defence and two tackles later Jack Owens went over.

Sheridan slotted over the extras to make the score 0-16.

From a penalty the ball went to Will Hughes who scored in the corner. Sheridan converted to make it 0-22 at half time.

After four minutes of the second half, Dominic Speakman scored an individual try.

He ran 50 yards up the touchline avoiding several despairing tacklers.

Three minutes later, the ball went left and then right where Sheridan put in Keiran Butterworth for the sixth try of the match.

With the Hornets were on last tackle, Jack Owens put in a cross kick which Speakman palmed to Luke Jones who squeezed over.

From a Blackbrook attack, Sheridan intercepted and ran 70 yards for another try.

The Hornets now face Huddersfield based side, Newsome Panthers this weekend, at home in the next round.

Tries scored by Owens, Butterworth, Hughes, Sheridan, Percival, Rigby, Jones and Speakman, goals by Sheridan, three.

Top tacklers were Buck, Ball and Speakman.

Team: Jack Owens, Keiran Butterworth, Andrew Sheridan, Mark Percival, Will Hughes, Tom Gilmore, Lewis Hulme, Lewis Whitty, Steven Ball, Jack Buck, Andrew Wainwright, Jon Rigby, Dominic Speakman.
