Wids slip to sixth after being outgunned by high-flyers

Bowdon 29 Widnes 8.

WIDNES slipped a place in the league table to sixth following this defeat against second placed Bowdon who kept up the pressure on leaders Wirral. It means that the men from Heath Road are now in sixth spot on 17 points.

Nevertheless, despite the defeat, Widnes put in a top effort on the day led from the front by youngster Tom McMuldroch who maintained his rich vein of form to pick up the man of the match award.

With a big, experienced team at their disposal, Bowdon had benefited from a game the previous week, whereas Widnes had been left kicking their heels since mid-December because of the weather.

This advantage paid dividends as the hosts built up a 19-3 half time lead following an earlier Kevin Leadbetter penalty.

Tim Hewlett had been a key player for Widnes in the first half whilst Kevin Farrow injected some pace following his move into the centre.

But, it was the experienced and influential Brian Capewell for Bowdon who marshalled his troops around the field with some clever distribution and kicking for field position.

At the start of the second half, Widnes began brightly and when Hewlett, Hancock, Borg and Loughnane got them moving, it freed up full back Andy Riley who was able to kick ahead and score a fine individual try to reduce the arrears.

The comeback was short-lived though, and from the re-start they conceded a penalty and Capewell slotted over the kick.

At 22-8, Widnes still had their chances and although Glover and Farrow both went close, it was Bowdon who had the last word with another try via their big pack on 73 minutes converted by that man Capewell once again.

Although disappointed with the result, Widnes should not feel too downhearted. They had a young, and fairly in-experienced side at their disposal on Saturday – who all performed well on the day – especially Chris Morgan on the wing who was making his senior debut. But they were up against a very big and very experienced Bowdon side who showed why they are up their challenging Wirral for that automatic promotion spot. Lee McDermott’s men face another exciting challenge on Saturday when they host fifth place Winnington Park who crashed heavily at home to Wirral.
