Thaw comes too late to save Wids fixture

THE thaw came too late and too quickly to save Widnes' home game with Hoylake last Saturday which was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.

The second team game away at Sale was also called off.

An enterprising third team, however, were fortunate enough to be able to switch their home game with Merseyside Police down the road to their opponents ground, and were rewarded with a 33-10 victory. Andy Rigby and Dave Breeden were both on top form as the team struggled in the first half before getting things right in he second period.

The win lifts them a place in the table and puts a little bit of daylight between themselves and some of the other sides at the bottom end of Miller Homes Division Four West.

In the first team’s case, only two league games in South Lancs Cheshire One survived the weather – and Wirral's victory puts them three points clear at the top and nine clear of Widnes who are located in fifth.

With the weather looking like it is getting back to something like normal, everyone at Heath Road will be keeping their fingers crossed that they will be back in action away at Bowdon in what should be a terrific game. The last time the two sides met was back in October when the game finished all square at 17-17.

Widnes Colts 29 Altrincham Kersal 12 WIDNES won the top of the table clash with a superb all round team performance. In doing so they closed the gap on Altrincham to two points with two games in hand as they try to keep their grip on the League title for the second year running. Widnes opened the scoring after 17 minutes, Schofield putting Paton over in the corner. Widnes had three opportunities to extend their lead after fine breaks from Lang only to see the final pass go to ground. The Wids front five were controlling the game Morris, Clark, Seville, Preston and Hancock were all prominent. Just before half time wing man Wills dummied his way over scoring under the posts from 35 yards out. Smith added the conversion to leave the Wids deservedly 12-0 up at the half way stage. McLindon wrapped up the victory early in the second half touching down after a fine pass from Whitty. The hardworking Garrity was next on the score sheet after a fine break from the excellent Simons. Altrincham replied with two late tries but Widnes had the last say, McLindon scoring from a kick and chase, Lang added the extras.
