WIDNES Vikings travel to fellow strugglers Salford Red Devils on Thursday (tonight) keen to avoid the unwanted record of a tenth straight Super League loss.

Vikings initially started their new life without Denis Betts - and under boss Francis Cummins - positively in France on Saturday, but then errors and failure to take chances saw them wilt in the final quarter.

The result leaves Vikings firmly rooted to the foot of the table ahead of tomorrow’s bottom-four battle.

Cummins said: “People will be looking at this game saying it is ‘do-or-die’, but mathematically that is not the situation.

“There will be some emotion out there, but we have to manage that and keep it under control.

“We have to get better at the little things that turn out to be big things – like keeping hold of the ball and executing better.

“We cannot afford to clock off for a few seconds per set – like falling for the short drop out like we did on Saturday.

“We are working hard - in some cases too hard, but in Thursday it is about doing our job and doing it well.

“We are not giving ourselves a chance with the errors, but we have to keep practising.

“But we have to make sure if we get an opportunity they take it.”

Following the recent loan swap between Thursday’s clubs, Vikings will have Weller Hauraki available and likewise Salford can call upon Greg Burke and Ed Chamberlain.

There appears to be some positive news on the injury front, on the horizon with Chris Houston, Krisnan Inu and Chris Dean back in training, but Cummins remains cautious.

“With Chris, he has been close for a while but we have to make sure he is right to finish a full season.

“He has done a lot in training - but just like Chris Dean and Krisnan Inu they are all coming back soon but we have to make sure they are 100 per cent,” Cummins said.
