WIDNES Vikings boss Denis Betts wants his side to produce a third fine performance in a row in Friday night’s derby clash against Warrington (7.35pm).

They need to pick themselves up from last week’s narrow one-point loss at Castleford, last year’s table toppers, ahead of meeting a so far winless Wolves.

And among the key Warrington men singled out by the Vikings boss is old boy Kevin Brown, who responded to the barracking he received last term by producing two of his best games of the campaign in games against Widnes.

But the key for Betts is following up on the pre-season aim of consistency.

Betts said: “In pre-season we spoke about being more consistent in our performances.

“We have put two really good performances together, but now we have to take that to three against a very tough opposition who are also hurting from having no points on the board.”

Stung by last year’s bottom four finish in the off-season Warrington brought in a new coach and have seen a significant change in personnel, but so far that has failed to deliver the goods and they are still on zero points.

That, however, makes the Wolves a dangerous beast to face.

“There is always is expectation on Warrington,” Betts said.

“They are a massive side, have great support and are well-funded.

“Their recruitment has been good. Centre Bryson Goodwin is a fantastic player, and he is only going to get better.

“Chris Hill is close to being the best front rower in the world.

“And after working with him with England in Australia I have seen that he is that good.

“Alongside him Daryl Clark is beginning to find his feet again, so it is a dangerous group of players who are in a dangerous position at the moment because they need a win.

“They will probably look at this fixture and see it as their chance to get a win and we are looking at them saying ‘bring it on’.

“To the fans I would say you know where we are and know how desperate Warrington are, so you get yourself down here on Friday night and it is going to be a fantastic experience.”

Betts was re-acquainted with former Vikings skipper Brown whilst on World Cup duty in the autumn, and once again he expects him to be influential in the derby clash.

“Kevin is a quality player and he had two fantastic games against us last year.

“He played in the World Cup final last year.

“He has ticked a few boxes in his career and I don’t doubt that he likes to prove a few points to the fans he left behind.

“He will also want to step up against some old mates and prove the point that he is still the same player,” Betts said.
