JOE Mellor said the win at Halifax was the result Widnes Vikings needed.

The 36-12 victory keeps them in the hunt for a top-three place, and the automatic spot in Super League 2018 that comes with it.

Mellor, who was among the scorers on what was his 150th appearance for the club at The Shay, says further improvement is needed though.

“I’m pleased with the result," he said.

"Our first half was very good, but we need to do a little work to improve the second-half performances. Overall though, it was a solid result.”

The win gave Vikings their first two points of their Qualifiers campaign, coming on the back of the home loss to Warrington.

“The result gives us confidence," he said.

"It was a win that we needed, we got it, and now we’ve got to keep moving forward. We’ve got Featherstone at home next and I’m looking forward to that.”

His teammates and coaches made a special presentation to him for reaching the 150th appearance milestone, including arranging video messages from his family members.

“I hadn’t realised that I’d hit that milestone until the lads let me know at the end of training on Saturday. Scoring on my 150th career game was special, and hopefully there’s a lot more to come.”

Teammate Chris Dean paid tribute saying: “It’s a good achievement for Joe.

"He’s been with the club since the first season back and I think he’s found his club here. He’s a consistent performer week in week out, and year in year out.

“Joe has been one of our better players the entire time he’s been here. No doubt he’ll have another 150 games, or maybe more, in his career to come.”

Widnes Vikings take on Featherstone Rovers at home at the Halton Stadium on Sunday, 3pm kick off.
