RUNCORN rowers Clare Ng and Sue Sljivic achieved great success this weekend, claiming a bronze medal at the first ever British Rowing Offshore Championships, presented by Visit Sarasota County at Sandbanks Beach, Poole.

In their first ever coastal row, Ng, aged 49, and Sljivic, 56, competed in a field of six crews in the women’s double scull, battling it out over 6km, navigating five turning buoys before a sprint on the beach to cross the finish line in third place.

They are the first English ladies to both medal at this event and to qualify for the World Coastal Rowing Championships.

Commentating later on the event, Sljivic said: “That was my first ever row in a coastal boat and it was brilliant.

"I normally row on a wide canal so it was great to row out with no banks to run into.”

Her doubles partner Ng added: “I am totally buzzing, that was absolutely amazing.

"I can’t wait to do it again!”
