WIDNES Vikings full-back Rhys Hanbury has become the latest star to commit his future to the club after signing a new contract.

The 30-year-old, who is Super League’s leading goalkicker so far this season, has signed a new three-year deal taking him to the end of the 2019 season.

Hanbury joined the Vikings from Wests Tigers in 2010 and his performances have prompted talk of a move back to his native Australia, but he has now followed teammates Charly Runciman, Joe Mellor, Eamonn O’Carroll, Chris Dean and Stefan Marsh in signing a new deal.

“I am really pleased that I have got the deal done, I always wanted to stay at the Vikings and me and my girlfriend are really happy,” Hanbury said in reaction.

“Coming to work every day with your best mates is a dream come true, I get on with the coaching staff and everybody at the club and wouldn't want to leave.

“I came over to the UK as half back but when I sat down with Denis, he had faith in me and let me take the full back role. I am so glad to be staying here for a further three years doing so.”

Vikings head coach Dennis Betts has hailed the significance of persuading Hanbury to stay on, given how high demand for his services has been.

“Rhys extending his current contract to the Vikings for three years is a notable acquisition,” he said.

“The energy and drive he brings to the squad has grown year on year, and he has certainly started this season in incredible form which has in turn highlighted his abilities as a full back and kicker.”

“More importantly to note is how sought after Rhys has been this year and all he wanted to be is part of this team.”
