VIKINGS’ win over Wigan ranks pretty highly on the club’s recent achievements since they returned to the top flight.

The gritty 18-12 victory at the DW Stadium was in contrast to the free-scoring wins over Leeds and Hull, but coach Denis Betts felt this was the one that showed how far they have come.

But it does not get any easier now – the Easter derby double-header against Warrington and former tenants St Helens is followed by the gruelling trip to Catalans, so there will be no resting on laurels.

Betts said: “It is hard to sit here and be humble after beating a Wigan side that had not lost at home for nearly two years.

“Our start at home has been really good. It was a huge test for us and we knew that this was a game when we would have to be at our best.

“There was some great rugby played. It was aggressive and quick and the ball was in play for the majority of the first half.

“It was a very tough, draining game.

These tough games, being put under pressure, set

after set, by a side like Wigan, showed the real nature of where we have come this year.

“Everyone talks about the points we scored against Leeds and Hull, but for us as a team what showed against Wigan, when we had our backs to the wall and we survived some tough times, was a real measure.”

After trying various ways of dealing with the Easter schedule in the past, Betts will take each game as it comes for the three matches in eight-day period.

But he currently has the bonus of a relatively healthy squad to choose from.

He added: “It is a bonus that we are healthy. The forwards are all going well, and at this stage we are nice and healthy.

“If that is the case and we are playing well I don’t think there will be a need for massive changes.”

With the ticket initiative in place Betts is looking forward to a packed ground on Easter Monday, kick-off 3pm, when Saints are the visitors.

He said: “We have been working hard to get this place full for four or five years.

“I think it’s a fantastic initiative for parents to bring their kids and they are working really hard to get as many people in as they can.”
