NEW signing Corey Thompson could challenge for the full back berth this term – but that is something current incumbent Rhys Hanbury is willing to rise to.

Although Thompson is likely to start on the wing for Widnes Vikings in Sunday’s friendly at home to Halifax, the coaching staff will be monitoring the situation and hope that the competition will bring the best out of Hanbury.

The former Canterbury Bulldog had a short run out at full back in the Warrington game over the Christmas period while Hanbury was still in Australia.

Hodgson said: “Initially Corey will be playing on the wing.

“It is one of those things where you are bringing quality to the club that helps other people maintain their level of performance.

“Last year Rhys probably would admit, by his standards, to not having a great season.

“Corey coming in brings in an element of Rhys needing to be at his best.

“We are not putting the fear into him and are not saying ‘if you don’t play well your position has gone’ because we all know what he can do.

“But at the same time, knowing that someone wants to play full back at a good level, will hopefully make sure Rhys is at his best.”

Hanbury welcomed the increasing fight for places in the club’s back-line ahead of the new season and cannot wait to stake his claim.

Hanbury said: “We need competition for places in each position and I welcome it. I know Corey is going to keep me on my toes, so I’m looking forward to it.

“The squad gets stronger each year. The main group has stuck together for a few years and we keep adding quality players.”

Charly Runciman has had a finger operation which will keep him out on Sunday as will Alex Gerrard, who has had a slight knee complaint. Neither are serious.

Hodgson expects both to be fit for the start of Super League on February 7.

Meanwhile Australian forward Chris Houston’s wife has just had a baby.

Although he is still training hard Down Under, he is awaiting the passport for his baby before the visa can be approved for him to come to England.
