RUNCORN Town cruised through to the Third Round of the FA Vase for the fourth time in six years with a 3-0 win at Pavilions over Northern Counties East League side Garforth Town.

It was the visitors who enjoyed the early pressure but they failed to test Danny Lever in the home goal with Liam Hardy and Curtley Martin-Wyatt both firing well wide of the goal from distance.

Town's should really have been ahead on 13 minutes when Warren Bellew's cross was headed back across goal by Paul Shanley, with James McShane's low header saved and Bellew's follow up well over.

McShane had another opportunity from Shanley's through ball on 25 minutes with the keeper Ben Hunter out quickly to save, but pressure told on 34 minutes with McShane getting the goal his play deserved to put Town ahead.

Gareth Grant put Shanley away down the left. His pace took him into the box and around the keeper before unselfishly squaring for McShane to tap the ball into the empty net.

Garforth hit back with Martin-Wyatt and Ashley Preece combining to give Hardy another strike from distance, but his effort was easily held by Lever. Martin-Wyatt also had a shot from just inside the box that Lever did well to tip around the post.

Town finished the half strongly with Bellew putting Shanley clear once more with Hunter denying him with his feet.

Garforth went closest to equalising just 40 seconds into the second half with danger man Hardy striking the foot of the post from 20 yards before Adam McKillop cleared.

And Town were given a huge let off on 67 minutes when Martin-Wyatt broke from a Town corner before sliding through a great ball for Spencer Lund to run clear at goal, the striker inexplicably opting to try and return the pass when a shot was the better option.

Such decisions prove costly, with Town doubling their lead within a minute. Lever's goal kick was headed on to Shanley who put McShane in. His dummy committed the goalkeeper before he slotted the ball in the net via the right hand post.

Grant had a opportunity to extend the lead on 78 minutes with the defence backing off him, Hunter turning his shot around the post for a corner. The striker was not to be denied though as he added the third on 84 minutes, turning in Mark Keddie's low cross at the second attempt.

With Garforth tiring, it could have been more but they had Man of the Match Hunter to thank for keeping it at three. He turned Shanley's goalbound effort around the post, before twice denying Mark Keddie with great saves.
