GAVIN Johnson is hoping to stay on four wheels when he tackles the Anglesey Circuit next weekend.

Here's what happened last time out in the Demon Tweeks / Yokohama classic Stock Hatch championship in association with 750 Motor Club:

The 34-year-old from Runcorn, now in his second year of racing, was pushing for a top 10 position at Cadwell Park when the stub axle sheared off and sent him flying.

It was the latest issue in a difficult baptism for Johnson, one driver of a three-car team called Skywheels Racing.

He said: "It has been hard work with the car.

"Last year was all about learning and we bought a bad car.

"This year is better but there are still issues.

"We suffered mechanical issues at Brands Hatch and retired the car, then the next round was Cadwell.

"The wheel sheared while I was in 12th chasing a top 10 from 23 cars on the grid.

"There's been no real good news stories this year apart from the next round is Anglesey on July 18 and 19 so we're hoping to go well there."

Johnson remains enthusiastic despite the issues.

The father of three, who lives in Norton and is a planning engineer for Siemens, said: "I am considering buying a new car for next season and doing a lot of testing to ensure we are at the front end of the grid.

"As with anything else, funding dictates."

Johnson's support team features his 62-year-old dad Gareth, best mate David Sheakey, Matt Lewis and Neil Scott.

He is hoping their hobby could be a help in schools.

Johnson said: "I'm contacting local primary schools to offer to take the car in and do talks about teamwork, thinking there are so many positive links to being part of a small team that the kids could benefit from seeing.

"They include relationships with people, working as a team, overcoming adversity, what you can achieve.

"I figure a different angle may be useful and maybe from something that is seen as quite cool."

Although motorsport is the current focus, Johnson's competitive drive has been seen in other sporting arenas.

He said: "I used to kart and got coverage for that when I won the TKM Novice Gold Cup at Three Sisters in Wigan.

"Then I was selected to represent the Rail Industry Great Britain Football Team touring Europe, playing in Berlin, Prague, Dublin and Luxembourg twice.

"I won a golf major at Runcorn Golf Club and twice received the Warrington and District Football League's golden boot prize with Sandymoor.

"I'm 34 now, so fun comes in the car and maybe in future back to golf.

"Maybe Runcorn does a multi-sport award? Ha ha."
