An impressive team effort saw Wild take home the four points this weekend after beating Blackburn Eagles 9-2 on Sunday, despite the team missing Ken Armstrong, Joshua Benstead and Thomas Revesz with Joe Greaves still out injured.

The game opened in style with Eagles taking the first penalty of the game with Arron Jordan receiving two minutes for slashing.

Within minutes Wild had taken the early lead after Bobby Caunce passed to Assistant Captain Ben Brown who smashed in the back of the net.

Blackburn quickly scored an equaliser a minute after sloppy defending which allowed Jordan Ashington to score from an assisted pass fed to him by Scott Barnett.

At 7.77 Filip Supa scored his first goal of the game put Wild back in the lead slotting home the puck into the goal passed Phil Crosby’s leg pads making the score line 2-1. Wild then continued to put the Eagles under pressure as both Lee Pollitt’s and Supa near attempts at goal were all saved by Crosby.

With just over five minutes left of the first period saw a Ben Brown shot at goal saved but which rebounded out to Bez Hughes who slotted the puck in the corner of the net extending the Wilds lead to 3-1. Just as the first period was coming to an end Tom Ratcliffe dropped the gloves and was sent to the sin bin for roughing, with Steve Hetherington getting the same punishment for the Eagles.

Eight minutes in the second period saw Caunce extended the Widnes lead further directly after a Wild power play firing into the net to make it 4-1. With under six minutes left, Supa hit a long shot past Crosby’s glove taking the score to 5-1.

With the second period coming to a close Caunce fired a clever pass to Dippnal who saw a quick shot at goal saved which Supa followed up to tip into the net giving Widnes a five goal advantage. Blackburn had chances throughout the period but their hard work didn’t pay off until Ashington scored from just in-front of the net whilst on the power play.

The third opened with the Wild sustaining pressure from the Eagles however with nearly five minutes gone playmaker Bobby Caunce fed the puck to recent signing Danny Bullock who read the situation well to take a shot which found the back of the net increasing the lead even further.

Filip Supa then fired home with a low shot with five minutes remaining of the game and then repeated the move scoring again to claim his fifth of the night helping secure a vital win in their push of the final playoff place.

MVP for Widnes was awarded to number 21 Filip Supa while David Williams took the MVP home for Blackburn Eagles.

Next weekend sees a home double header against Coventry Blaze on Saturday (17:30) and bottom of the table Bradford Bulldogs (18:15).
