VIKINGS head across the Pennines on Friday night in buoyant mood and looking to build on their first win over Wakefield since their return to the top flight.

Although they tackle a currently winless Huddersfield Giants side, Vikings assistant coach Brett Hodgson believes his former club are in a false position after going close in their last two big games.

Hodgson believes the Giants’ big pack and the kicking game of Danny Brough pose a massive threat which Vikings must neutralise if they are to return home with the spoils.

The Giants will certainly be revved up after being pipped by Leeds on Friday, but Vikings will hope that this urgency for a win can create some anxiety.

Hodgson said: “Huddersfield are in a false position – I felt they were unlucky against Wigan in round two and created lot of opportunities and were the better team for a third of the game against Leeds and almost snatched it.

“They don’t deserve to be without points and are going to get them but I am confident we can build on our game.

“We will worry about what we can do going into that game, because they will come out firing and we need to match that.”

He cited Brough’s ability to kick team’s off the park as a major threat but pointed to the need to match Giants’ big men physically.

“We have the size that we have lacked the last couple of years. We are relatively mobile as well,” said Hodgson.

“Gil Dudson was excellent against Wakefield – he blew a little bit at first but he got better in that second one and he will be better for that run.

“Our middle unit have to be good against Huddersfield’s big fellas and win the arm wrestle in the middle to allow our dummy halves and ball players to play out of the line.”
