The RFL has sent its condolences to the family of the governing body’s former Chairman Reg Parker, who has died after a long illness. He was 87.

A former Barrow, Wakefield Trinity and Blackpool Borough player, Mr Parker was RFL Chairman in 1984-85. As an administrator, he was Great Britain manager on the Lions tours to Australasia in 1974 and 1977.

Playing at second row, Mr Parker was famously a member of the Barrow team that defeated Workington Town 21-12 in the 1955 Challenge Cup final at Wembley.

RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer said: “It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of Reg Parker.

“I had the privilege of knowing Reg for almost 40 years: not only was he a great servant to the game, he was a great personality who will be much missed.

“Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
