Widnes slumped to their first home defeat of the season after a disappointing performance that stretches their run off losses against Wakefield to five matches.

They were very much the authors of their own downfall with some poor game management in the closing stages handing Trinity the chance to snatch it.

And that is what they did, and after both sides had missed a pair of drop goals and Danny Tickle a penalty, Wakefield clinched with a Paul Sykes try.

That came after an awful knock on 20 metres out with 90 seconds on the clock.

Although they chased the drop goal attempt, Sykes stepped through for the winner.

Widnes were slow out of the blocks but despite that looked to have carved open a clear cut chance up the middle, but Macgraff Leuluai opted to,keep hold rather than pass to the supporting Jon Clarke.

From there Kevin Brown tried to smuggle out an offload on the Wakefield line but Jarrod Sammut pick up and although he was tracked all way by Stefan Marsh, Chris Riley was on his shoulder to take pass and score on nine minutes.

Wakefield began to dominate, with Vikings surprisingly lacklustre and so on 19 minutes, after a repeat set from a scrappy play Richard Moore drove through the middle to score from close range, Sammut goaled it and at 12-0 Widnes needed a wake up.

On 23 minutes Widnes got back in when they moved the ball left for Dec Hulme to dive in at the corner, with Tickle's goal going in off the post 12-6.

Widnes went close, when Tickle was held over on his back, but the rest of the half was scoreless until Paddy Flynn went in at the corner on 39 minutes, with the goal again coming from Tickle. That made it 12-12 at half time, with Tickle's penalty falling short.

Three minutes in Widnes hit the front when Hulme caught a chip wide and got it down a few inches to spare.

But sloppy defence allowed Jon Molloy a try on 49 metres, when he just barged through from close range.

At 18-18 the rest of the half was scoreless until the last minute with Craven and Tickle missing one-pointers for Widnes, Sykes and Sammut going wide for Trinity.

Widnes really blew it when they panicked into taking a drop early in the set, with Tickle stabbing at it early and failing to get it off the ground.

They still had chance to save the point, but an Alex Gerrard knock on in tackle two handed Trinity a gift they were not going to spurn.

After the game Kevin Brown collapsed with delayed concussions from a tackle late in the second half that Denis Betts believed was from a shoulder charge.
