DANNY Tickle says reaching a final is the type of memory that isn’t easily forgotten as he bids for a Tetley’s Challenge Cup quarter-final place with his Widnes Vikings side, who take on Salford Red Devils in the fifth round at the AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday (3.00pm).

Tickle is hopeful that the Vikings can build on their good start to the season, which continued with a good win over St Helens on Monday.

“I think all form goes out of the window though when you play in the Challenge Cup,” said Tickle. “It’s a tough game whether you play Super League or Championship opposition.”

“But it’s exciting. We have had a good start to the season and are confident, but it’s not a surprise to us.”

Tickle was a part of the Hull FC side who were beaten finalists last year, and so is no stranger to the atmosphere the cup can bring.

“It was really good to make it all the way to Wembley last year,” he said. “I’ve got some fond memories of the competition, like the 2008 cup final and last year’s final – both with Hull.

“Despite the results they’re memories that stick with you. It’s a special competition, partly because it’s so hard to reach the final, but every team has got a chance.”

The former Halifax man was pleased to get past his former side in the previous round of the competition, ahead of what looks like another tough test away to the Red Devils.

“We got our first round game out of the way against Halifax but it was a tough game,” said Tickle. “I think in the end the fitness difference between a Super League and Championship club showed, but they certainly gave us a test. There are shocks every year so we’re glad to be in the next round.”

“Every game is going to be tough, and you’ve got to beat top teams to get far – that has always been the case.

“Everyone is aware of the off-field stuff going on at Salford, but they will want to put a marker down. I’m sure it will be an intense game.”
