WIDNES face their biggest test of the season so far on Saturday, when they travel to take on current North One West league leaders Wirral in the game of the day at the Memorial Ground.

Wirral have gone from strength to strength this season and currently lead the table by three points, just ahead of Birkenhead Park who continue to wait patiently in the wings and ready to pounce should they slip up.

Wirral also have a score to settle with Lee McDermott’s side, who are the only team to beat them this season back in mid-October.

Widnes were deserved winners that day and built up a healthy winning margin before allowing the visitors to score some late points to reduce the deficit.

Widnes, though, will not be overawed and will be relishing the task of putting another spoke in their opponents promotion wheel. They currently lie third in the table, with a good away record, and another victory will keep them in touch with the leaders as well as maintaining the gap between themselves and both Kendal and Vale of Lune.

Last week’s enforced lay off has given both teams the chance to rest those aching limbs after the rigours of a tough, unrelenting campaign so far, and fans from both sides will be hoping for another cracker to match those of recent seasons.

The game kicks off at 2.15pm.
