RUNCORN Linnets’ league charge continued with a win at Stockport Sports to go second in the table, a point behind rivals Runcorn Town.

The Linnets had the perfect start on a blustery afternoon, Antony Hickey strike from the edge of the penalty box finding the Stockport net in the first minute.

With the wind behind them, Runcorn had more chances on the hosts’ goal, Michael Duffy shooting over and Kykle Hamid having a shot deflected.

Ben Halfacre shot over for the home side, before Linnets imposed themselves further. Skipper Michael Tomlinson headed wide and Hickey almost had a second after Stockport ‘keeper Richie Torkington’s clearance went straight to him, only for the ricochet to go wide.

Torkington did well to kept out a Hamid shot late in the first half, as the visitors had to turn round with only the one goal lead to show for their dominance.

Hamid again came close after the restart with a header as Runcorn continued to press. But on the hour, Kevin Towey tucked the ball home after being set up by Martin Crowder’s break.

And Towey had his second and Runcorn’s third soon afterwards in similar short-range fashion, substitute Mark Houghton with the assist this time.

Michael Duffy also went close before the resolute Runcorn defence held out some late pressure to ensure another clean sheet.
