Warrington Wolves name three new signings in strong squad for festive friendly against Widnes Vikings
THIRTEEN members of Warrington Wolves’ top-end Super League squad, including three signings, are in line to figure in the festive friendly against Widnes Vikings.
Debuts are set to be handed to Scotland World Cup star and full-back recruit Matty Russell, along with 6ft 5in prop signing Anthony England from Featherstone Rovers when the arch-rivals meet at the Select Security Stadium on Sunday, December 29, kick off 3pm.
And winger Kevin Penny, who won the Northern Rail Cup during a spell with Widnes, is expected to make his return to the top flight after rejoining Wolves from Swinton Lions.
Tony Smith’s strong-looking squad also includes 2013 top try scorer Joel Monaghan, fellow former Australian NRL star Trent Waterhouse and long-time first-choice centres Ryan Atkins and Chris Bridge.
However, with only one recognised half back, former Widnes loanee Gareth O’Brien, among the 20 names Bridge could be in the running to play stand off.
Players named who have yet to appear in the Wolves first team are former Culcheth Eagles and Latchford Albion second rower Joe Philbin, aged 19; winger Gene Ormsby, aged 21, from Oldham; fellow back James Saltonstall, aged 20, from Halifax; Cumbrian centre Ryan Shaw, aged 21 and Cumbrian prop Tom Walker, who will turn 19 on Christmas Day.
