Simon Burton was presented with the North West Counties ‘Manager of the Month’ award for October prior to kick off by league officials John Deal and Geoff Wilkinson. Burton was quick to praise his assistants and shared the prestigious award with them.
Town’s manager introduced a new kick off plan today, it almost paid his team an immediate dividend when Shanley headed against the crossbar with Winsford keeper Beckett helpless.
As the rain began to fall the playing surface held up well and looked immaculate. Winsford began to get control of the midfield area displaying close control and quick passing, Town were made to work hard to keep the visitors at bay.
Toone did really well to block a shot by Marshall inside the penalty area.
When Spearrit played the ball across to Toone, with plenty of time the Town defender completely missed his clearance presenting Noon with an opening but the striker fired well wide of Wills goal. Haughton produced a piece of magic to dribble past 4 defenders before having his shot blocked by a fifth, McShane was screaming for the ball in an unmarked position 6yds from an open goal.
Wills produced a good save to deny Ingham as the visitors looked dangerous on the break, Ingham in particular was causing the town defence problems down the right with his speed and trickery. Winsford keeper Beckitt was almost caught out taking his time with the ball at his feet, Shanley partly blocking his then hurried clearance the ball eventually being safely cleared by Liddle. Ingham produced a good run and cross that was safely headed for a corner by Burton as Wills came out of his goal.
Town’s Smith then did well cutting in from the right beating 3 defenders before firing wildly over the crossbar.
The final action of the half saw Winsford captain Lane clear a goal scoring opportunity from the feet of McShane.
A fairly even 1st half with neither keeper troubled with on target shots.
Half Time: Runcorn Town 0 - 0 Winsford United The start of the second started in a deluge of rain that threatened the game being abandoned.
The 15min downpour resulted in mistakes from both teams but no goals resulted from them.
From a Toone corner, Spearrit headed to McShane who fired over the crossbar from just 6yds. Town introduced both Grant and Carey in an effort to grab the all important goal.
A low hard cross from Smith was deflected into the path of Carey but his shot was blocked.
Town took the lead when Keddie fed Gareth Grant with an inch perfect ball, the burly striker chested the ball down and hit it on the volley past Bechett for a spectacular goal in the 70th min. Town were attacking at every opportunity and deserved the goal, the introduction of the 2 subs was aptly timed by Burton and increased the tempo of the game.
From the restart Westwood hit a hopeful shot from the halfway line, in the blustery conditions it was a clever move, but Wills was alert and covered it well.
Following a foul on Burton, Smith sent the resultant free kick into the Winsford penalty area the ball kicked up against a defenders hand, with Town shouting for a penalty the Referee ruled play on.
A good shot by Grant was blocked the ball falling nicely to Carey who saw his shot rebound off a defender for a corner.
As the game went into added on time Winsford had a great chance when Marshall cut in from the left, his rising shot clearing the angle with Wills scrambling across goal.
A trip on Grant resulted in a free kick from Toone that was sliced by a defender only for Beckett to make a spectacular save diving to his left.
A good 3 points for Town in difficult conditions against a good workmanlike Winsford team.
