Runcorn Linnets aim for FA Cup double
10:39am Thursday 10th October 2013 in Sport
RUNCORN Linnets Under 18s on Thursday hope to complete the first half of a possible club double in major Football Association competitions.
Just two days before Linnets’ first team visit North Ferriby United as the last North West Counties League team standing in the FA Cup, Jay Maddock’s youngsters will take on opposition from Stalybridge Celtic, Ferriby’s Skrill (Football Conference) North colleagues, in the FA Youth Cup.
The second qualifying round home tie at the Millbank Linnets Stadium (ko 7.45pm) is reward for Linnets U18s excellent 4-0 victory in the previous round at fellow NWCL League Premier Division club Glossop North End, where the visitors turned on the early style in an excellent game.
Fielding an U18s side is a new venture for Linnets this season, the club opting to run without a reserve side to concentrate on bringing through young players with the potential to star in a prospective regional development league.
The decision already seems to be paying dividends with the team having won all five league and knockout matches – with a goals-for average of five per game and just three goals in total conceded.
They lie second in the Warrington Youth League, a point behind Eagle with a game in hand, and have also made progress in the Cheshire FA U17s Cup at the expense of Alex Soccer Centre, fielding their younger players in this particular tournament.
Manager Jay Maddock took charge of the fledgling U18s, a mix of the club’s 2012-13 youth and U17s sides, after managing Linnets’ second string in the NWCL Reserve Division and likes what he has seen so far.
Joey Dunn’s current senior side has already made club history in the FA Cup by claiming a first-time place in the third qualifying round and on Humberside this Saturday, they will be aiming to upset the odds against North Ferriby - hosts three divisions their senior.
