9:42am Monday 30th September 2013 in Sport
RUNCORN Linnets reached the FA Cup third qualifying round for the first time in the club's history after a 1-0 win over higher-league opponents Cammel Laird at the Millbank.
Linnets had the more of the early stages, Antony Kickey seeing a header go wide before Matty Atherton headed on to the bar as Linnets dominated proceedings.
And after Mark Houghton was fouled just outside the box, Matt Cross made the visitors pay with a beauty into the top-corner.
Linnets finished the first half still on the upper-hand with the defensive ranks rarely troubled.
Early in the second half Steve Ferrigan saw a header go over from a corner for the Evo-Stik League side.
However, Runcorn were not going to allow the visitors an equaliser, Hickey in particular impressive with his defensive commitment.
Linnets had chances to double the lead, only for Cammell Laird 'keeper Mills to save from headers twice. Andy Robertson saved a shot from Jamie Henders in a rare testing moment for the Linnets 'keeper before the visitors were reduced to ten men late on when captain Chay Dysart picked up a second booking.
And with the extra man, Linnets comfortably held out to continue their remarkable recent cup form and create club history.
Runcorn: Robertson, Duffy, Crowder, Burke, Cross (capt.), Ellison (McDowell, 74), Wade, Houghton, Hickey, Atherton, Lomax Attendance: 423.
