Widnes 34 Liverpool St Helens18
11:51am Friday 13th September 2013 in Sport
Widnes got their league season off to the best of starts with victory over Liverpool St Helens in the opening round of the competition.
The result was also sweet revenge for the narrow cup defeat they suffered at the hands of the same opponents the previous week.
Mike Garrity gave them the lead with an early interception try converted by Matty Smith before LSH replied with a try. Paul Borg then bagged another for the home side followed by a long range effort from Tom McMuldroch.
LSH got their second try a minute before half time, before Matty Smith knocked over a penalty in injury time.
Successful penalty kicks to either side left the game evenly poised at 26 – 18, before the ‘man for all seasons’ Jon Hetherington, battled his way over the line to score, before a late drop goal from Chris Atkin settled it for the home side.
Widnes travel to newly promoted Broughton Park on Saturday, kick off 3.00pm.
